Please briefly describe why this event fits into the A.S funding guidelines: The Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC) will host a hands-on Ocean-Safe Sunscreen Workshop where participants learn to formulate a reef-friendly, mineral-based sunscreen using non-nano zinc oxide along with natural emollients such as almond oil, jojoba oil, cacao butter, coconut oil, and shea butter. Attendees will work directly with provided materials including jars, stirrers, cups, and zinc oxide powder while chemists explain ingredient functions, safety considerations, and the environmental importance of ocean-safe SPF. Through guided mixing, heating, and blending, participants will create their own jar of sunscreen and gain a foundational understanding of sustainable formulation practices and the science behind mineral UV protection.
