UCSD has a large pre-health population, and given the significant percentage of Spanish speakers in California, learning Medical Spanish is essential for building community and improving patient comfort. As Global Medical Brigades prepares for our medical mission in Panama, we are hosting an interactive workshop open to all UCSD students to build bilingual medical skills. At the beginning of the workshop, attendees will be introduced to specific Spanish phrases and terminology required for their assigned clinical stations (Triage, Dental, and Pharmacy). Native Spanish speakers will act as 'patients' and will be given cards with symptoms of the patient they are playing. Using the phrases they learned, the 'volunteers' will have to figure out the patient's symptoms and keep a record of them. At the final station, Pharmacy, the volunteers will look at the symptoms holistically and match them to the correct diagnosis. We are requesting funding for 110lb boneless wings to serve as the 'treatment' at the final Pharmacy station. Students who successfully navigate the language barrier, piece together the correct diagnosis, and verify it with lead volunteers will receive their 'prescription' (wings) as a reward for completing the simulation. This event provides a high-impact, hands-on learning experience that is free and open to all students.
